At approximately 6:00 p.m. Tuesday March 31st, 2015 Niagara on the Lake Fire Services responded to a report of a brush fire on Melrose Drive in Niagara on the Lake. During the course of their duties firefighters discovered a body and the Niagara Regional Police Service was contacted. Officers attended the scene to commence an investigation.
The identity of the deceased and the cause of death remain under investigation. Detectives from the Niagara Falls Criminal Investigations Branch are working with the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Coroner.
The deceased has been transported to Hamilton where a post mortem examination will be conducted to determine cause of death. Police continue to secure the fire scene pending further investigation. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
