On Wednesday, January 7th, 2014 at approximately 11:45 pm the Niagara Regional Police Service were contacted by a member of the public regarding a possible impaired driver in the area of Ontario Street in City of St. Catharines.
According to police, a member of the Special Enforcement Unit attended the area and located the suspect vehicle in a parking lot of a local business on Ontario Street and the sole occupant, 33 year old Christopher Michael COOK of St. Catharines identified himself with a valid Ontario Photo Card that was altered with a printed label reading “Temporary Driver’s Licence”.
Further investigation revealed that the licence plates were not registered for the motor vehicle, COOK could not produce proof of valid insurance, and he was criminally prohibited from operating a motor vehicle anywhere in Canada as a result of 11 previous convictions for Driving While Disqualified and an additional 2 Dangerous Driving convictions. COOK is also currently on criminal charge for another Driving While Disqualified incident.
As a result of this investigation COOK was criminally charged with Driving While Disqualified and numerous provincial offences under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. COOK was held pending a bail hearing and his vehicle was impounded for 180 days.
