The Canada Post strike is now entering its 20th day, causing ripples across the business community, which is urging the federal government to step in and resolve the deadlock.
The Retail Council of Canada voiced concerns yesterday, highlighting that the ongoing strike by over 55,000 workers nationwide is endangering businesses and their employees. Despite similar interventions in labor disputes earlier this year, the federal government has, so far, resisted calls to intervene.
Last week, federal mediation efforts were halted as the opposing sides remained too far apart to reach a consensus. Over the weekend, Canada Post presented a new negotiation framework to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. However, the union insists that critical issues, such as wages and the expansion of postal services, must be addressed before any agreement can be reached.
A significant sticking point in negotiations is the push to extend Canada Post delivery services to weekends, with both sides at odds over how to implement this change.
