On Saturday, December 21, 2019, the Niagara Regional Police continued their Festive R.I.D.E. Campaign by conducting sobriety check points at two locations; one in Welland and in St. Catharines.
Both of the locations were busy and police say approximately 450 vehicles were stopped and the drivers were questioned regarding their consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
Of those spoken to, 21 drivers were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, including several random, mandatory screening test.
Of all the drivers who provided samples, 2 of the drivers were arrested for having a Blood Alcohol Concentration exceeding 80 MG of alcohol or more in their blood.
Additionally, three of the drivers provided a sample in the warning range and subsequently had their license suspended for 3 days.
One driver was suspected of having taken a controlled drug, and a roadside Standard Field Sobriety Test was conducted. The driver performed well and no further action was taken.
In addition to the arrests and suspensions, 6 offence notices were issued notices for various Provincial Offences.
As the Festive Season continues, the Niagara Regional Police want the public to be aware that officers will be continually looking for impaired drivers. Whether it is a scheduled R.I.D.E. event or officers that are on general patrol, police will be attempting to locate and arrest those drivers who decide to operate their vehicle while impaired.
If you are attending a social event this holiday season, please drink responsibly and have a plan to arrive home safely. Consider having a designated driver, call a taxi or use public transit. The Niagara Regional Police has continued to conduct R.I.D.E. checks each week in December and throughout the holiday season.
