The Niagara Regional Police Service’s commitment to road safety continues with a R.I.D.E campaign that happened last night in Welland.

During the evening aproximately 300 vehicles were stopped of which seven were required to provide a roadside breath sample for suspicion of being over the legal blood alcohol level of .80 mgs.

Police say they noted a significant increase in vehicles where the presence of the odor of marijuana was detected, but, further investigation revealed no criminal act.

Numerous fines were issued to drivers in contravention of the Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and Liquor License Act.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading cause of Criminal Deaths in Canada and destroys thousands of lives every year.

This initiative has been made possible, in part as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
