Here at the Niagara Falls Humane Society (NFHS) we value the growing community!
If you drive into almost any area of the city, there is construction. New homes are being build. Old homes are being renovated. New families are being started. Roads are being expanded for the influx of traffic in developing areas. We are expanding!
If you’ve been by the shelter lately, you would have seen the construction in our front yard. New paths are being built, gates put up, fences to contain dogs in the new areas. It’s all happening as the snow melts away and spring begins to unpack her bags to stay for a while.
Getting outside into the fresh air is invigorating. It shakes off the claustrophobia that winter seems to bring each year. It renews us and makes us feel like taking on a new project, or a new pet. In the next few weeks, we will be getting many new dogs at the shelter from other areas. We will love to see you stop by and try to find yourself a dog for their Forever Homes. Often, our dedicated dog walker Linda will be able to provide very good insight into each dog. So, when you stop by, take a moment to chat with her and to thank her for her unrelenting dedication to our dogs.
Bernadette Peters (main picture) weighs 68 lbs. She will need a home with no other animals. She loves to play and would like a forever home that will give her lots of exercise and love! Linda observes: I love to spend time with this spunky girl!!! She is so much fun to play with in the pen, chasing down toys as I throw them. Bernadette is a nice looking dog with her caramel coat and inquisitive eyes. She is very smart so you have to stay on top of her, or she will take over. After lots of exercise she is sitting, coming and doing some heeling for me now. She can be jumpy so obedience classes would be ideal to give her a new outlook on life. She just needs a committed owner who would work with her, give her lots of exercise and love too.
Dog Walker Linda enjoyed spending time with Jimmy and has this to share: Jimmy is another one of those dogs you fall so deeply for!
Jimmy Below:
I just love this charmer with his good looks and amiable personality. I thoroughly enjoy all the times I spend with him, he comes, downs and sits for me and will even heel when he’s in the mood. He takes treats very nicely from me, doesn’t grab them anymore. I’ve worked with him over that. With his gorgeous black coat and playful ways you’d never know how old he is. I’m surprised he is still at the shelter with all he has going for him! Jimmy weighs 55 lbs. Jimmy is very loving and high energy, he has a fun loving attitude and loves to talk to you through his cage but once he’s out his tail is wagging and he’s ready to go. Jimmy is quite strong and is suggested to not go home with a family who has small children he will grab food out of your hands and is quite rough with play we feel like he would be best suited for a home with children over 10; he is jumpy and sometimes doesn’t realize that he is a big boy. He is full of personality and love – his smile is infectious. Come out and meet Jimmy if you think he might be the right fit for you. A $150 adoption fee applies for Jimmy.
A mini Panther who is an absolute Kitten at heart. Billy is energetic and very playful while being very easy to handle and just loves his lap time and pets. Bill below:
Billy would be better suited being the only cat of the household and would make an easy transition to home with no other cats.
Denim came to the shelter as an injured stray after she was hit by a car and found under someone’s BBQ and fence. She was severely injured and rushed to the vets where she was evaluated to have multiple broken bones and fractures. She has since had extensive life saving surgery which cost the shelter over $2000 to repair her broken femurs and have a rod inserted so she could walk again along with weeks of medication and constant care.
This little warrior is looking for a forever home that will take care of her. She will need to be the only cat in her new home as she does not want to share her space with any other felines and she gets very upset. She is extremely friendly and has the spunk and energy and a big personality packed into a small frame. The shelter is looking for funds to help cover the cost of her surgery which was over $2000 , and we need to keep up our efforts to save the animals like Denim who need a second chance at life after enduring so much. Please contact the shelter if you are interested in donating to Denim’s care and the care for the many animals who require these life saving efforts, we couldn’t do it without the help from our community. Hashbrown is a chatty lady who has a big personality. She likes attention on her own terms but a quick way to bond is through food, she can’t resist! Hashbrown will need an adult only home and she will need to be the only cat. Hashbrown below:
Honeydew is a sweet girl who loves chin rubs. She prefers if you take a calm approach so she can get to know you, she loves her treats and is always snuggled in her bed. Honeydew below:
This week I want to challenge all of our readers. I think growing individually and as a community is very important. I want to challenge each of you to do something new, something that you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t for whatever reason. Maybe fear has limited you. Maybe uncertainty stops you from taking that first step into that passion project you’ve been dying to start. Challenge yourself to just do it. Embrace it and see what change is has on you. When we are authentic, expressing our warmth and light in all directions, we cause things to grow.
Share this story with others and if there’s something that has stuck out and impacted you, we want to hear about it. When we are authentic, expressing our warmth and light in all directions, we cause things to grow.
We now have a great new way you can connect with NFHS. See our adoptions, report cruelty, or connect with local shops support NFHS. You can find our app in the Apple Store or on Google Play.
Help the animals at the shelter by sponsoring a Cage -$25/mo or Kennel- $50/mo.
