“The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it” – Mother Teresa
Why become a volunteer? To feel great by doing a good thing, contributing to an important cause and to spend time with like-minded people.
The job of a volunteer at the cat adoption center is working with cats that are normally strays, some who have had very little or no human interactions. They come in frightened, possibly angry or aggressive, and some show no emotion at all. So in saying that, TRUST has to happen, and to do that we do our best to spend as much time with them as we can.
During that interaction we see changes in their personalities and behaviours and we know that showing them love, time and patience goes a long way in helping them to find a forever home. It is very rewarding and enjoyable to find the right family that matches with the right cat. The saying is, It is not the people that pick the animal (cat) but the animal (cat) that picks the people. It also does wonders for us too. It provides us with emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. There is a bond that happens between helping them and us, they help us by reducing stress and some other emotions which help in being calm and relaxed in our daily life. It is a win-win situation. It also gives us professional and life experiences for future endeavours. Stating on a resume that you are a volunteer gives future employers knowledge about you. It shows teamwork, respect of others through communication and work ethics.
“Volunteers don’t get paid not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless” – Sherry Anderson
