For the first time ever, the city of Niagara Falls joined with other major cities around the world by simultaneously transforming its cityscape into a dazzling red display in commemoration of the Chinese New Year as captured in this video overview.
City officials and the Chinese Consulate gather for the Chinese New Year symbolic lighting ceremony at the Marriott Fallsview Hotel. Below, from left Niagara Falls City Councillor Joyce Morocco, Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, He Wei Consul -General of the People’s Republic of China, Janice Thomson, Chair of Niagara Falls Illumination Board & Niagara Parks Commission, Wayne Gates, MPP, Niagara Falls and Tatjana Jaluvka Winter Festival of Lights.
On hand for the ceremony as well were a variety of media outlets that included CCTV, the largest broadcaster in China which televised the occasion to their audience of over 1 biliion people.

After an official ceremony, a countdown welcomed in the official illumination of Niagara Falls to red at 7 p.m. and the beginning of 2018 in the Chinese Calendar which is the The Year of the Dog . (Below, guests enjoy a reception prior to the official ceremony)
The initiative is also meant to remind people of the strong ties China has with our country and to celebrate the year 2018 which has been designated by our governments as the official year of Canada/China tourism.
