This weekend members of the Ontario Provincial Police partnered up with the Niagara Regional Police to conduct R.I.D.E. checkpoints within the Cities of Niagara Falls and Thorold.

Over 700 drivers were stopped throughout the night and questioned regarding any alcohol consumption.  As a result, a total of 8 drivers were asked to provide a sample of their breath for an analysis.  Each one of these drivers provided a sample of their breath which fell into the acceptable range.

In addition to the above drivers who were stopped, another driver was requested to perform Standard Field Sobriety Tests at the roadside, when it was suspected that they were operating their vehicle under the influence of a drug.  This driver successfully passed the tests and was also free to drive away.

A total of 5 tickets were issued to drivers for various offences, including one driver who was charged with operating their vehicle with a suspended licence for unpaid fines.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing Impaired Driving Offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
