A  transport truck carrying a flammable, hazardous chemical called phosphine that rolled on to the QEW last afternoon in St. Catharines has been cleared this morning for travel.

Police say the QEW that was closed in both directions between Ontario St. and Highway 406 for several hours was reopened  in all but one Fort Erie-bound lane  by about 3:30 a.m. this morning.

Also lifted now is the a shelter-in-place order where police asked residents within a two kilometre radius to keep their windows and chimneys closed and their air conditioners turned off.  People who had to evacuate (about 3,500 households and businesses) also are able to return.  Both these measures occured as a precaution in case of any leakage from the truck.

A hazardous goods cleanup crew from Hamilton later determined the phosphine was contained and there was no actual leak.
