According to the Ontario Provincial Police, distracted drivers were behind more fatal collisions in Ontario than any other factor. That means distracted driver accidents accounted for more collisions than drivers that were drinking, speeding, or not wearing their seatbelts.
Looking at the statistics for 2016, 65 people were reported killed in OPP-investigated crashes where inattentive drivers were involved for the fourth straight year.
Top contributing factors for fatal collisions in Ontario (called the Big Four by police):
- 65 distracted driving
- 55 speed-related
- 53 seat-belt related
- 45 alcohol-related
During March Break the OPP will crack down on distracted driving and launch their annual distracted driving campaign. Distracted and inattentive driving can result in a minimum $490 fine complete with demerit points.
