Police say, on August 24th, 2016 the Port Colborne Fire Department, Niagara Regional Police Service and the Niagara E.M.S attended the area of Davis Street, Port Colborne in response to a 911 call reporting a fire at a residence. Upon the arrival of Emergency Services, it was quickly determined that a fire did not exist and the information relayed by the caller to the 911 system was false.
Further investigation indicated that the caller allegedly fabricated the report of a house fire in an attempt to garner a faster police response to a non-emergent incident reported a short time earlier. Jacques Cousineau, 55 years of age, has been charged with Public Mischief, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada, and subsequently released from custody to appear in court at a later date.
The Niagara Regional Police Service reminds everyone that making a false report to Emergency Services, particularly while using the Emergency 911 system, is an offence and may result in criminal charges.
