During the evening of Saturday December 5th 2015, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service conducted a R.I.D.E. checkpoint at two locations in Niagara.
Police say officers set up their R.I.D.E. checkpoints in both the Cities of Niagara Falls and Thorold. Over 300 vehicles were stopped and 13 road-side alcohol tests were issued with two, three-day suspensions given. One arrest for impaired driving was made relating to the R.I.D.E. program. Additionally, two arrests were made relating to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) for possession of drugs. Three Provincial Offences Act Notices were given out as well.
Also in the Region of Niagara on the same evening were two other arrests for impaired driving as a result of motor vehicle collisions, one in St. Catharines and one in Niagara Falls.
Drivers are reminded once again that impaired driving is still the leading cause of criminal death in Canada. Impaired motorists place everyone’s safety at risk by drinking and driving on Ontario roads and highways with thousands of lives lost every year. If you suspect another motorist of impairment , the Niagara Regional Police Service encourages you to contact police to report his crime.
Members of the Special Enforcement Unit would also like to remind drivers that our Drug Recognition Officers are trained to detect impairment through the use of drugs. Driving while impaired by drugs is also a Criminal Offence subject to fines and/or jail time.
