Police say on Saturday, July 25 at approximately 10:30 am , a 9-1-1 call was received from a home on Thorold Townline Road in Thorold. Niagara Emergency Medical Services along with the Niagara Regional Police Service responded for a report of a 13 month old child in medical distress. The child was transported to the Niagara Health System, St. Catharines site. Due to the child’s condition, the child was transferred to McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton that same day.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the child died on Sunday July 26. On Monday November 2nd, 2015, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Homicide Unit have arrested and charged Brian Matthews with manslaughter. Brian Matthews (37 yrs. of Thorold), was the grandfather of the deceased child. He will be appearing in court later today and held in custody pending a bail hearing. His court appearance will be held at the Robert S.K. Welch courthouse located at 59 Church Street, St. Catharines.
