For over 12 hours a portion of the Red Hill Valley Parkway was closed yesterday after a two-vehicle crash at 8 am sent a transport truck into the Red Hill Valley creek and caused a fuel spill.
According to police, the accident started when a vehicle entering the southbound lanes of the parkway from Barton Street lost control and struck the large transport truck causing it to crash through the west side guard rail and into the creek. As a result, the southbound lanes of the parkway were closed between the Queen Elizabeth Way and the Barton Street East ramp. (truck crashed in creek under overpass below)
Emergency crews were on the scene to clean up the damage until 10 pm last night with heavy equipment to remove the truck, which was carrying two scissor lifts, and other work crews worked on containing the spill which was handled by the City of Hamilton’s hazardous materials response crews.
Amazingly the female driver of the car only had minor injuries and the truck driver was unharmed. Police say it was the truck driver’s actions of steering away that likely averted a potentially fatal crash.
The Ontario Ministry of Environment was called into the situation due to the spill and the police investigation into the Red Hill collision is ongoing.
