It seems a wrong turn can lead to more than just a detour.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at the Peace Bridge had quite the surprise when they encountered a 24-year-old motorist who claimed to have mistakenly ended up at the Canadian border. Without a passport or any other compliant document, he was taken to secondary inspection.
Here’s where it gets even more intriguing: Officers say they discovered the driver was a Honduran national and an alleged member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang.
The driver was arrested and is now facing removal proceedings.
But the surprises didn’t end there. Just two days later, on Nov. 24, a 62-year-old commercial truck driver found himself in a similar predicament at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Thanks to a misguided GPS, this Louisiana resident also unintentionally approached the border. Officers discovered a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and ammunition inside his truck. Due to prior felony convictions, he was in unlawful possession of the weapon and was arrested on the spot by New York State Police.
