The Niagara Regional Police have updated situation regarding their search for 65 year old female, Maria Jagiello who disappeared after going for a walk near her home on Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Welland.
On Friday March 12, 2021, at approximately 10:15am officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service Marine Unit located a body in the Welland River near Prince Charles Drive and Colbeck Drive in Welland.
Detectives from our 3 District – Welland office, the Forensic Services Unit and the Coroner investigated the matter and the deceased has been identified as Maria Jagiello.
Foul play is not suspected. Out of respect for the next of kin no further information is being released.

The Niagara Regional Police have updated situation regarding their search for 65 year old female, Maria Jagiello who disappeared after going for a regular walk near her home on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at approximately 7:00pm Jagiello left her home on foot in the area of Silver Wood Avenue Street and Roselawn Crescent in Welland. Jagiello often goes for 15-20 minute walks near her home. This area is near Webber Road and Clare Avenue.
The search efforts in the southwest area of Welland are ongoing and it is anticipated officers will be conducting ground searches trying to locate Jagiello.
Police are continuing to appeal to residents in the area who own security cameras to review footage from February 28, 2021, between 6:50pm and 8:00pm. Any sightings of Jagiello should reported to the 3 District – Welland detectives at 905-688-4111, extension 1009077.
Jagiello is described as:
White female
5’10ft. tall
Medium build
Blonde shoulder length hair.
Possibly wearing a hat with fur trim or flaps, beige winter coat and black pants.
