Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, marks the shortest day of the year, at least for the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the first day of winter!

As far as Christmas shopping and holiday travel, it also marks the busiest day of the year.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority estimates 2.8 million passengers will pass through Toronto Pearson International Airport this holiday season and that will peak today with over 135,000 passengers arriving or departing from Toronto Pearson.

Airport officials are reminding passengers to leave holiday gifts unwrapped in carry-on luggage, as packages will be subject to inspection at security checkpoints.

Retail business activity is also anticipated to be bigger than Black Friday today. Debit and credit processor Moneris, which handles about one-third of all electronic transactions in Canada, says its data says that about 2 pm will be the hour that sees the most action with shoppers.

Bottom Line: A busy time of year and brace yourself for crowds if you plan on hitting the shops or airport today in particular!
