I was going to title this article ‘Spinning Out of Control’ because I try to keep a sense of humor when writing to make it fun yet true.
Unfortunately there’s no room for humor this time because the truth of the matter is NIAGARA WE NEED YOUR HELP DESPERATELY.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Niagara Falls Humane Society. Easy right, adoptions, dogs, cats, puppies, kittens…and other furry critters even a chicken and a pig made a visit.
What is the second thing that comes to mind when you think about what happens behind scenes at the NFHS…with a little thought, feeding, playing with the animals, helping injured animals…what else?
Hi, my name is Linda. I am a volunteer at the NFHS and my main responsibility is laundry. A lot of people are very surprised by that answer. They always ask “how much laundry could you possibly have”. Well, let me tell you.
We do an average of 8 – 10 loads of laundry PER DAY except Sunday. We have two washers; a larger one that we use for beds, blankets and bedspreads. The other machine is an apartment size that we use for smaller items such as towels, sheets, toys, leashes collars, muzzles, etc. We also have two dryers. We go through 2 – 3 bottles of detergent, usually 2 bottles of bleach and countless dryer sheets PER DAY.
Let me tell you why we have so much laundry. Each cat gets a towel, bed and toys if the cat also has kittens then it’s a bigger cage, extra towels and more toys. We have five cat rooms plus a ‘Harmony Room’ where we put cats to play together. Every dog either boarding or for adoption gets a blanket/bedspread and a toy. Smaller dogs also get a bed. Anything that comes in contact with an animal has to be washed PER DAY. Not to mention the rags and floor pads we use for cleaning.
Now, let’s get down to brass tacks. We have no time to beat around the bush or be sensitive about our approach. Our large washer and one of our dryers has stopped working. The pile of laundry that I can’t wash now is above my head. For the amount of laundry that we do we actually need commercial machines but all we are asking is help in getting ours fixed.
Right now we URGENTLY need towels, small beds and sheets. We also need someone who out of the kindness of his heart will come and look at our machines. We can only pay you with a gracious thank you from our hearts. It may not be the season for giving yet, but it is voting season and hopefully we can find some community minded politicians that aren’t more concerned with tourism and will help a local business at a time of need.
