For the past several months members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Guns, Gangs, and Grows unit have been investigating a large scale marijuana grow operation in Thorold.
As a result of the investigation, police say they obtained two CDSA (Controlled Drugs and Substance Act) search warrants for two Cataract Road locations and with the assistance of the Niagara Regional Police Morality Unit, Opioid Unit and Welland Uniform patrol officers, both search warrants were executed last night at 5:00 pm.
Upon executing the search warrants six people were taken into custody without incident. After further investigation one male was charged.
Charged with 1 count of Unlawful Production of Marijuana, 1 count of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking , and 1 count of Possession of Proceeds of crime is 64-year-old Jui Kang Liang. Liang was then released from custody on an officer in charge undertaking.
As a result of the search Police located and seized 2683 marijuana plants , 287.5 pounds of processed marijuana, and $1500.00 in cash. The value of the drugs seized was just under 3.2 million dollars.
Members of the public are reminded that marijuana is not legal and the only way people can grow marijuana is if they possess a “licence to produce ” issued by Health Canada.>
