Our featured pet above: Arizona weighs 46 lbs. She is a high energy girl who acts shy in her kennel but is full of personality once she gets comfortable. For more information CLICK HERE.
Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, because they are priceless. We don’t know who said this but the truth of it rings loud and clear to the Niagara Falls Humane Society (NFHS)! Our volunteers are simply the best!
My volunteer story began almost a decade ago. I was an advertising representative who called the (then) Communications Director of the NFHS about an ad. She and I “clicked” and chatted about animals and advertising over the phone and by email. We’d never have recognized each other in person… this was before we were on Facebook… and talked about getting together for a coffee “someday”. (Below, Buffy a Lab Shepherd Mix up for adoption now. A few years passed and we happened to end up in the same building during an event in Niagara Falls. I went to one vendor and bought flowers for her. Then I spotted the NFHS booth, feeling a little nervous, like pen pals meeting for the first time. She wasn’t there, but I left the flowers and a note for her. The next workday, we laughed about our timing. (Below, Felix a German Shepherd Collie Mix. For more information CLICK HERE).
By the time we finally met in person, I knew I needed to be “doing” something to help. I have always loved animals and had I not been terrible at math, I might have become a veterinarian. By then, my friend noticed my love and ability for writing. She asked if I’d like to be a contributor to the weekly newspaper articles. Of course, I said. It was a perfect fit! (Below, Rascal a German Shepherd Mix. For more information CLICK HERE).
Since then, I have done a few things with the NFHS; from contributor to scheduler to kitten snuggler to cat wrangler. I cannot imagine a life without – at least – my toe in the door of this fantastic place.
If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re an animal lover, like me. I suspect you’d like to help but don’t know how to begin. Let me lend a light for the journey! Go to http://www.nfhs.ca/. Check out the “Get Involved” and “Wish List” tabs. Then… DO IT. Get involved! Buy or donate something on the wish list. Fill out a volunteer application and get ready to get your hands dirty, your heartstrings pulled and your face licked. There’s plenty of work to be done and we’ll welcome you to the fold!
