Police say on Saturday, August 5, 2017, just before midnight, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service Uniform Branch in St. Catharines responded to a hold-up alarm at Big Bee Convenience, located at 134 Lake Street.
Just prior to the hold-up alarm being activated a male entered the store while attempting to hide his identity and attended the counter while demanding the store clerk give him money from the cash register. The male kept one of his hands in the front pouch of his hoody and pointed an unknown object towards the store clerk, creating the perception that he had a weapon.
The store clerk was able to press the silent hold up alarm to alert the police while stalling the male. A few short moments later the male left the store without obtaining any items. Uniform Officers arrived shortly after and quickly secured the crime scene and established a perimeter in the area. With the assistance of the K9 Unit a track of the male led to a residence in the area. Uniform Officers were able to locate and arrest the male.
Members of St. Catharines Detective Office continued the investigation from Uniform Officers. A search warrant of the males home was executed in the morning of Sunday, August 6, 2017 by members of the Detective Office and Forensic Services Unit. As a result of police investigation, it was determined that the male is alleged to be responsible for three other robberies in the area, which occurred on June 15, July 13, and July 27.
Charged with 4 counts of Robbery, contrary to s. 344(1)(b) and 4 counts of Disguised with Intent, contrary to s. 351(2) is Thomas York, a 45 year old resident of St. Catharines.
