A local tennis standout who represented Canada has died. Bruno Agostinelli was killed after he crashed into a car in Toronto Wednesday night. He trained in the Niagara area and continued to influence young players across the region.
Members and staff of the Niagara Academy of Sports are in shock after the loss of one of their own. Toronto police say Bruno Agostinelli died after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into another vehicle along Steeles Avenue.
The 28 year old was newly married and just welcomed his first child about two weeks ago.
Agostinelli was a great tennis player at Saint Paul Catholic High school. He earned a full scholarship to play at the University of Kentucky and became an All-American and won Male Athlete of the Year in 2009. That same year he won Canada’s fifth and deciding rubber at a Davis Cup tie against Peru in the 2009. He later moved to Toronto to coach for Team Canada and his influence on the small tennis community was profound.
He will be sadly missed.
