At approximately 10:15 PM on Sunday, September 6th, 2015, the Niagara Emergency Medical Services, St Catharines Fire Services and the Niagara Regional Police Service were dispatched for a collision between a bicycle and a motor vehicle on Lake Street south of Linwell Road in the City of St Catharines, in the Region of Niagara.

Initial investigation revealed that a 24-year-old male resident of St Catharines was riding his Cervelo bicycle southbound on Lake Street when he cut in front of a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am that was also southbound on Lake Street. The Pontiac was being driven by a 60-year-old St Catharines male. At one point, before or after the cyclist fell, these vehicles collided with one another.  The cyclist struck his head on the roadway and suffered life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Niagara Health Systems St Catharines Site and then later transferred to Hamilton Health Sciences General Site where he remains in serious condition. The driver of the Pontiac was uninjured in the collision.

This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit.

The Niagara Regional Police Service would like to remind all cyclists to be proactive towards safety practices including the use of safety devices such as bicycle helmets and the requirements for lights and a bell.
