According to police, at approximately 10:10 AM On Tuesday, July 7th, 2015, the Niagara Emergency Medical Services, Niagara Falls Fire Department and the Niagara Regional Police Service were dispatched for a cyclist who had crashed his bicycle on Drummond Road near Summer Street in the City of Niagara Falls, in the Region of Niagara.
Initial investigation revealed that a 41-year-old male resident of Niagara Falls was riding his CCM bicycle northbound on the east sidewalk of Drummond Road. As the cyclist travelled downhill he lost control of his bicycle and struck yard waste bags that had been put to the curb for pickup, causing him to fall off his bicycle and striking his head on the sidewalk.
This male suffered life threatening injuries to his head and was transported to the Niagara Health System Greater Niagara General Site by ambulance, before being air lifted to the Hamilton Health Sciences General Site remains in hospital under observation in critical but stable condition.
This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit.
The Niagara Regional Police Service would like to remind all users of the roadway to be proactive towards safety practices and regulations including the use of recommended safety devices, including but not limited to bicycle helmets.
