Today was a great day to be out on the water if you have a passion for flatwater sports, or, are intrigued to find out if you have an inner talent with an oar or a paddle in your hand…
It was the summer kickoff on the Waterway at the PenFinancial Credit Union Flatwater Community Centre in Welland and we were there to check out the gorgeous scenery and get a little exercise! We were joined by many others on rowing shells, kayaks, pedal boats, and stand up paddle boards that were made available to everyone today (plus free hot dogs)!
We drove up to the Community Centre where the action was happening and lots of people were hanging out…
The North Welland Flatwater Community Centre, built by volunteers with the support of local businesses in 2010, is now officially called the PenFinancial Credit Union Flatwater Community Centre and the PenFinancial Credit Union will provide $50,000 over the next five years specifically for Community Program Support for those groups currently operating out of the Flatwater Community Centre.
PenFinancial Credit Union’s financial commitment will assist the South Niagara Canoe Club, Notre Dame Rowing Club, Open Water Swimmers & Triathlon Group, and the Welland Canoe Rental Program in their community programming.
It is a beautiful place, even though the skies were a little grey by the time we rolled up…
But that did not deter anyone from getting out on the water…
Young and old(er) enjoyed…..
Even Sammy the American Eskimo dog thought the canoes were just fine!!
Some of us were a little more experienced than others….paddle boarding anyone?!!
If you didn’t make it out today, no worries. You can rent a boat all summer and enjoy…
The new rental program is something everyone in the niagara area should definitely check out this summer with free rentals to those 16 years of age and younger!
This area is truly a treasure and the calm waters make it an ideal place to paddle about…
