Police say today at 10:42AM the Niagara Regional Police Service Communications Unit received a call to 911. The male caller made threats of violence towards the Seaway Mall and its occupants.
Uniform police officers from the Welland office of the NRPS, Niagara Emergency Medical Services and the Welland Fire Department attended the mall. The Seaway Mall in conjunction with the police initiated an evacuation for safety purposes.
The NRPS K9 Unit assisted in clearing the mall which was reopened after approximately 50 minutes.
A male later called back to advise that the incident had been a hoax.
NRPS Chief Jeff McGuire states:
“This was not a prank or funny, it was a criminal act that put people in harm’s way. Our officers will investigate this matter thoroughly to identify who is responsible. Those responsible will be arrested and charged before the courts.”
The investigation remains ongoing by Detectives from the Welland office of the Niagara Regional Police Service.
