Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
- Niagara Falls – Welland – Southern Niagara Region
- St. Catharines – Grimsby – Northern Niagara Region
A line of thunderstorms ahead of a strong cold front is racing through this evening. There is a potential for some of these thunderstorms to become severe this evening. The main threat will be damaging winds to 90 km/h. Some hail is also possible. In addition frequent lightning and very heavy downpours suddenly reducing visibility to under 250 metres are possible. The threat of severe thunderstorms will diminish later this evening.
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.
