The Niagara Regional Police Service would like to warn the public and ask for their assistance with any information in relation to distraction style thefts that have occurred in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Welland.
Police believe a group of unknown persons are responsible for a series of thefts that have occurred within the Niagara area beginning in June of 2014. The male and/or female suspects approach members of the public offering to sell gold jewelry. During the course of the following conversation the Victim’s jewelry is unknowingly removed, as the fake jewelry is put on them and left behind.
The male and/or female suspects have also tried to use the rouse of needing money for gas and that they would be willing to sell jewelry cheap. After providing the money the Victim would alter discovery the jewelry is fake.
Police are asking the public to report any similar suspicious behavior.
Tips
– The public should use caution in any sale of goods that takes place outside of registered businesses
– Listen to your intuition if it sounds too good to be true
– Do not provide strangers access to you private information
– Recalling descriptions of suspicious persons and vehicles can assist the police in preventing crime
