On Thursday March 12, 2015 members of the Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) were conducting Speed Enforcement at Woodlawn Rd and River Rd in the City of Welland.
A vehicle was speeding 85 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. Police directed the male driver to stop and pull to the side of the road. The driver accelerated toward the officer, forcing the officer to quickly move out of the way to avoid being struck. The driver then turned, accelerating to an estimated 100 km/h in a posted 40 km/h school zone with students present outside the school.
The driver continued driving in a dangerous manner passing vehicles in the oncoming lanes, proceeding through a stop sign without stopping and passing at total of thirteen 40 km/h speed zone signs through a residential neighbourhood.
Police strategically followed the suspect vehicle through the school zone while taking into consideration public safety. Police were able to quickly and safely bring the drivers’ dangerous driving to an end. The driver was arrested before entering a heavily traveled intersection.
The driver has a previous history of dangerous driving and impaired driving. The driver was charged with Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation and Drive Disqualified under the Criminal Code of Canada. The vehicle was seized for 7 days and the driver also received a number of Provincial Offence Notices.
The driver was remanded into custody and has a Bail Hearing on Monday March 15, 2015.
The Niagara Regional Police ask the public to continue helping them keep the roads safe in Niagara by calling 911 to report Impaired and Dangerous Drivers.
