The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC), ET Canada and its New Year’s Eve event partners are pleased to announce an exciting roster of musical talent has been assembled for this year’s FREE New Year’s concert in Queen Victoria Park.
The evening will include performances from top recording artist Keith Urban (singing one of his top hits “You’ll think of Me” in video shown), along with Nick Jonas, Sam Mendes, and Canadian electropop sensation: Lights! All these top ranked entertainers will provide a full night of amazing entertainment!
A Little Bit About the Stars
One of country music’s biggest stars of the past decade, and also one of the judges on American Idol, Urban was born in New Zealand and raised in nearby Australia, making his biggest splash in Nashville, where he helped rewrite the rules of contemporary country music. By embracing drum loops and elements of Top 40 pop, Urban wrote songs that appealed to a wide audience, effectively satisfying his Nashville fans without alienating those more accustomed to pop music. He also became a genuine celebrity, known for his good looks, his marriage to Nicole Kidman, and his outspoken battle with alcoholism. Even so, it was the music that maintained Urban’s career, from his work with the Ranch during the late ’90s to the acclaimed solo albums that followed.
Also joining Urban on stage this year will be Nick Jonas, the unspoken leader of the Jonas Brothers. Nick attracted legions of young fans with his fizzy, Disney-approved pop songs early in his career. Following this Jonas began working with several other musicians on a side project in late 2009. Members from Prince’s New Power Generation were recruited to join the lineup, including Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella, and the group dubbed itself Nick Jonas & the Administration before making its debut in early 2010 with the album Who I Am That. After a few years spent on other projects, Nick Jonas regrouped with a 2014 solo tour followed by the November release of an eponymous album.
But the music doesn’t stop there! Singer and songwriter Shawn Mendes will also be in the Falls for the New Year’s Bash. A Teen Choice award winner this year, who will be an opening act for Taylor Swift’s 2015 world tour, he broke records with his debut single and after posting a series of his cover versions to various video-sharing sites, Mendes earned himself a following tens of thousands of viewers strong. His mix of Ed Sheeran style with Justin Bieber appeal also appealed to Island Records, who signed Mendes in 2014. That same year they released the then 15-year-old’s debut single, “Life of the Party.” American radio initially ignored it, but the track entered the Billboard 100 singles chart at number 24, making Mendes the youngest artist to land a debut single in the Top 25. The song was also included on Mendes’ four-track Island debut, The Shawn Mendes EP.
The entertainment powerhouse lineup concludes with an appearance by Lights whose debut single “Drive My Soul” introduced her synthesis of alt-rock and contemporary synth pop. Lights good looks and talent have also made her an endearing presence on MuchMusic’s TV countdown. Early the following year, Lights won a Juno Award for New Artist of the Year and landed a spot on that summer’s Warped Tour. In 2014, Lights released her 3rd studio album, Little Machines. Lights was also one of the headliners for this year’s S.C.E.N.E. music festival in St. Catharines.
The Niagara Falls New Year’s concert in Queen Victoria Park (QVP) draws approximately 50,000 people to the Park, and this year is expected to be no different, so come out and celebrate and enjoy two spectacular fireworks displays planned for 8:45 p.m. and midnight that evening.
