The Pan Am Games is the world’s third largest international multi-sport competition, with a number of events taking place right here in Niagara starting tomorrow, but first here’s a quick peak of the action to come:

The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, presented by President’s Choice and OLG, is coming to Niagara Falls on Saturday, June 20th!

Torch Relay Schedule Through the Niagara Region 

The Pan Am flame will begin the day at the Welland Market Square for the Saturday morning farmers market before visiting the Welland Community Wellness Complex and the Welland Pan Am Flatwater Centre. This is the venue for the canoe/kayak sprint competitions.

The flame will then make its way to St.Catharines for a community celebration at Lakeside Park where community torchbearer Connor Rollo will light the cauldron.

From there, it will visit the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course and a trip on the Hornblower Niagara Cruises. The flame will conclude the evening at Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls.

Saturday, June 20th, 2015 – Relay Day #21 – Welland Market Square (50 Market Square, Welland):

10:15 am: Community torchbearer Nancy Gee will be the first torchbearer of the day.

Wellnd Pan Am Flatwater Centre (16 Townline Tunnel Road (58A) at CanalbankStreet, Welland):

11:15 am: Flame will be carried along the Welland Canal on a K-4 kayak by Lilian Culp.

Lakeside Park (9 Main Street, St. Catharines):

2:30 pm: Flame will arrive carried by community torchbearer Connor Rollo. Three-time world medalist in wrestling, Jessica McDonald, will carry the flame out of the day celebration.

Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course (57 Main Street, St.Catharines):

3:45 pm: Local rower, Oniqua Kamaka, will take the flame aboard a rowboat.

Hornblower Niagara Cruises (5920 Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls):

6:00 pm: Richard Deschatelets, community torchbearer and Pan Am Commonwealth Games multi-medalist in wrestling, will carry the Pan Am flame onboard the Hornblower.

Queen Victoria Park (Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls):

7:00 pm: Kathleen Hunt, community torchbearer and Pan Am Games gold medalist in badminton, will arrive with the Pan Am flame and light the community cauldron. Francesco Yates will perform at the celebration.

**The Pan Am torch relay began on May 30th, 2015 and will finalize on July 10, 2015 with the dramatic lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony in Downtown Toronto.

Niagara Falls Torch Relay Ceremony

4:45 pm – 5:20 pm – Saturday, June 20, 2015

Residents and businesses are invited to the Niagara Pan Am Games torch relay ceremony taking place outside of City Hall in Centennial Square (4310 Queen St., Niagara Falls).

4:45 pm: Performance by the St. Michael Catholic High School Drum Line

4:48 pm: City Councillor and professional athlete Mike Strange as Master of Ceremony to introduce the event, and acknowledge past Pan Am Games athletes in attendance

5:05 pm: Arrival of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am flame by torchbearer Michelle MacKinnon

5:07 pm: Photos with dignitaries, speakers, torchbearer, and past athletes

5:15 pm: OLG Cheque Presentation to City Councillor Joyce Morocco by John MacFarlane, Senior VP of Gaming for OLG

5:20 pm: Closing of ceremony

Immediately following the ceremony, the torch relay will continue along the Niagara Parkway, finishing at Queen Victoria Park. There, the celebration will continue until 8:00 pm!

 Niagara Pan Am Games Schedule

Welland

July 11-14, 2015

Canoeing and kayaking events will take place at the Pan Am Flatwater Centre in Welland. It is an ideal spot for hosting fast-paced paddling sports, and in preparation for the 2015 Pan American Games, there is a widened a section of the canal, two new buildings (including a timing tower and the athlete centre), a plaza, start towers and permanent seating for 500 spectators.

There will be 13 different medal events here; 5 Women’s events, and 8 Men’s events. Races vary from 200 meters to 1000 meters in distance.
